you have hatched...
the black dog

Phelim is fourteen. He's in bed, and he's just been woken up by the barking and snarling of a large dog outside his first floor flat.

He opens the window to lean out and have a look down below, and as he leans, a huge black dog leaps almost up to his window. It comes so close that its barking sprays white drool at Phelim, who quickly shuts the window and backs off.

He shunts his feet into his shoes, shoves on some clothing and runs into the kitchen to find something to throw at it.

The kitchen is full of tiny, naked people eating raw potatoes.

They have big eyes and lanky hair, and they're covered smudges of rich brown soil. They all stare at Phelim, mid-crunch. One of them is drinking from a bowl of milk. It stops, and wipes its mouth.

The Domovoy, explains the one with the bowl: he is the Domovoy. He takes care of the house, for the Green family. He is their Domovoy. He likes the milk Phelim leaves out for him. (Phelim, in shock, mutters that the milk is for the cat.)

These others, explains the Domovoy, are the Glashans. They tend your crops. Phelim doesn't manage to say that they live in a city and don't have any crops because he's too busy looking at the mess in the kitchen. The dog has now moved around to this side of the flat, and is ferociously barking and snarling right ourside the front door.

The Glashans run to the front door, where Phelim notices that they've piled up some furniture from the living room, and are now bringing out the TV to throw against the pile.

Phelim hears his sister's voice in his head... the mess you've made... what did I tell you about letting anyone in the flat... you can't be trusted, Phelim Green...

Phelim tries to stop the Glashans, but the dog starts throwing itself against the door. The Domovoy emerges from the sister's bedroom, carrying a bunch of marigolds. He opens the kitchen window. Phelim runs to stop him. The dog tries to leap in. Phelim tries to grab the Domovoy. The Domovoy throws a marigold at the dog and it backs off. Phelim shuts the window, breathless, terrified.

The Domovoy fetches a pillowcase and fills it with the rest of the marigolds (good magic, he says they are) and some stale hot cross buns from the cupboard (also good magic), and a few coins from the piggybank, which he throws on the floor to break into.

The dog starts at the door again. Phelim decides he's either dreaming, or mad. The Domovoy tells Phelim that he is the one, the only one. The one who must kill the Worm and save them all.

Then the Domovoy opens the kitchen window, throws a marigold out, throws out the pillowcase, and the Glashans throw Phelim out of the window.

The black dog snarls at Phelim, who runs away through the estate.
